Thoughts on Boise State through 4 games

I have got to say, that I wasn’t expecting Boise State to be 4-0 after their first 4 games and from what I have been hearing from most other Bronco fans, they were thinking the same.  Large part of the success that BSU has been having is in part to Kellen Moore. You could not ask for any more than what this kid has given this team. With the O-Line having problems opening up running lanes for Ian Johnson and company, this team would be in a world of hurt if not for Moore. Personally, I knew this kid was going to be good, because of the numbers that he put up in High School, but to be this good, this fast……. is incredible.

The O-Line seems to be holding their own when pass protecting, but it seems that they lack some of the size and strength that the line has had in past years. That will come with time when some of these younger guys get the chance to bulk up even more. To this date Ian Johnson only has 266 yards rushing on 55 carries, way below his normal standards. Mean while Kellen has thrown:  for 1165 yards, completing 72% of his passes, thrown 7 touchdowns and 2 interceptions, and has a passer rating of 181.3 good for 6th in the nation. That is a higher passer rating than Mark Sanchez of USC and Max Hall of BYU; both of which are Heisman contenders.

So who has Kellen been getting the ball to? Everyone is the short answer. The long answer would be: Jeremy Childs with 217 yards receiving, Titus Young with 168, TE Chris O’Neill with 131, Vinny Perretta with 132, Ian Johnson with 117, Austin Pettis with 72, and for the sake of time 9 others have caught passes for over 20 yards.

Now the defense has been a huge bright spot this year and I'm probably not giving them enough credit. They have been tough and nasty through the first 4 games of the year. Enough cannot be said, about how much they have improved since last year. This defense has been claiming that they are the most physical to ever play at Boise State. Up to this point, I will not disagree with them. They are only allowing 12 points a game. The top 5 tacklers so far are: Jeron Johnson with 38, Ellis Powers with 28, Derrell Acrey with 24, Kyle Gnigg with 23, and Brandyn Thompson with 21.

My Grade through the first 4 games:

Offense:  –A*
Defense:  –A*

*What keeps them from getting an A is the run game is struggling for the offense and the defense had a 4th quarter laps against Oregon.
